About CDSE :

The Up no.1 Defence academy lets you explore the possibilities of the country’s most respected examinations, Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination is organized twice a year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) with the purpose to recruit passionate individuals into the Indian Military Academy (IMA), the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Indian Naval Academy (INA) and the Indian Air Force Academy.

The CDS aspirants who are looking for a career in the Indian Defence Services can keep a check on the official notification. Generally it is announced around August and March, the exams being conducted later in February and November respectively. The exam is eligible only for the unmarried graduates and they are selected on the basis of their interviews as per the Services Selection Board or SSB. Later the qualified candidates are picked by the appropriate academies.

Eligibility Criteria :

Citizenship-

  • The aspirant must be a national of India, or a subject of Bhutan, Nepal, a Tibetan refugee who came to India with the purpose of residing here permanently before January 1st, 1962. 

  • Or an aspirant who is an Indian native and migrated from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma or East African countries such as Kenya, the United Republic of Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia, Zaire and Ethiopia. 

  • Or the aspirant came to India from Vietnam with the intention to permanently stay here. 

 

Educational Qualifications:

 

  1. In case of IMA: The aspirant must have a graduation degree in any discipline from a recognized university or an institute.

  2. In case of OTA: The aspirant must have a graduation degree in any discipline from a recognized university or an institute.

  3. In case of INA: The aspirant is required to have a degree in engineering. 

  4.  In case of Air Force Academy: The aspirant must have passed 12th with Physics and Mathematics as subjects along with they must have a degree from a recognized university or a bachelor's degree in engineering/ technology.

Age Limit :

  • In case of the IMA :

The unmarried male candidates are  required between the age of 19-24 years as on 1st January or 1st July of the year succeeding the year of examination.

  • In case of the Indian Naval Academy :

The unmarried male candidates are required between the age of 19-22 years as on 1st January or 1st July of the year succeeding; the year of examination.

  • In case of the Air Force Academy :

The unmarried male candidates are required between the age of 20-24 years as on 1st January or 1st July of the year succeeding the year of examination.

  • In case of the Officers Training Academy :

(SSC Course for men) The Male candidates (married or unmarried) are required between the age of 19-25 years as on 1st January or 1st July of the year succeeding the year of examination.

  • ​In case of the Officers Training Academy :

SSC Women Non -Technical Course) The unmarried women, who are widows and have not remarried or are divorcees (in possession of divorce documents) are eligible. The age is kept between 19-25 years as on 1st January or 1st July of the year succeeding the year of examination.

How to Apply For CDS :

The CDS application is to be filled out in two stages: Part I & II. The candidates are expected to complete the basic details in Part I of the registration. Later, the  applicants must pay the application fees, choose the exam center, upload photographs, signature, photo identity card document and declaration in Part 2.

 

Part 1:

  • Check out the official upsc.gov.in website.  

  • To register for the CDS test, click on the Part-I link 

  • To apply online for CDS, enter personal information, address, and educational qualifications 

  • Applicants will need to choose their preferred branch 

  • Prior to submitting the registration form, check the data 

  • The registration ID will be produced upon effective registration. 

Part 2:

To fill out the information in Part-II of the CDS application form, candidates have to login with their generated registration ID. The exam fee charged can be paid by the applicants via cash/credit card/debit card or net banking.

Physical Standards :

As per the physical norm requirements, candidates applying for CDS recruitment should be physically fit. On medical grounds, some applicants will be denied. Until submitting their applications, applicants are recommended to get themselves medically checked.

Selection Procedure :

  1. SCHEME OF EXAMINATION

  2. The Competitive examination comprises:

(a) Written examination
(b) Interview for intelligence and personality test .


The subjects of the written examination, the time allowed and the maximum marks allotted to each subject will be as follows:
(a) For Admission to Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy and Air Force Academy:—

(b) For Admission to Officers’ Training Academy :—

However, for each course, the maximum marks assigned to the written examination and the interviews will be equivalent, i.e. the maximum marks assigned to the written examination and the interviews will be 300, 300, 300 and 200 respectively for admission to the Indian Military Academy, the Indian Naval Academy, the Air Force Academy and the Officers' Training Academy.

Intelligence and Personality Test :

The SSB protocol consists of stage I and stage II selection processes. Only those candidates who cleared the stage I are eligible to reach the next stage II. The particulars are as follows: 

 

(a) The stage I comprises of Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests and includes Picture Perception* Description Test (PP&DT). The applicants will be shortlisted on the basis of a ratio of the OIR Test performance and PP&DT. 

 

(b) Then comes the stage II in which Interview elements, Duties of the Group Testing Officer, Psychology Assessments and Conference are analyzed. Over 4 days, these tests are conducted.
