About NDA :

National Defence Academy (NDA) is a premier joint training institution and center of excellence for grooming junior leaders for the Indian armed forces and armed forces of Friendly Foreign Countries.

NDA Exam is conducted for recruiting candidates for Army, Navy and Air Force in NDA (National Defence Academy) and Naval Academy.

To join National Defence Academy a candidate must appear in the entrance exam conducted by Union Public Service Commission, twice a year, normally in month of March and August. Candidate must be a unmarried male. To join NDA one must pass written followed by SSB, medicals and finally to be in merit list.

All the cadets joining the NDA after their 10+2 Examination, are trained in the Academy for three years culminating into graduation in B.A/B.Sc. or B. Sc. (Computer Science) degree of Jawaharlal Nehru University. Apart from academic training they are also trained in outdoor skills, like Drill, PT and games. The emphasis in NDA is on character building, esprit-de-corps, mental and physical robustness, leadership and a sense of keen observation. NDA has an excellent infrastructure for all-round training of cadets and vast array of facilities like spacious and well maintained classrooms, well equipped labs, two Olympic size swimming pools, a Gymnasium, 32 football grounds, polo grounds, a cricket stadium and a number of squash and tennis courts. The academic year is divided into two terms, viz. Spring Term (January to May) and Autumn Term (July to December). Here a cadet has to undergo training for six terms before he passes out from NDA.

On successful completion of the three-year course, Army cadets proceed to Indian Military Academy at Dehradun, Naval cadets to Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala and Air Force cadets to the Air Force Academy at Hyderabad. After completion of one year of training at their respective academies, they are commissioned as Officers into respective services.

Eligibility Criteria :

(a) Nationality : A candidate must be unmarried male and must be :
(i) a citizen of India, or
(ii) a subject of Bhutan, or
(iii) a subject of Nepal, or
(iv) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
(v) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African Countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (ii), (iii), (iv) and (v) above shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India.
Certificate of eligibility will not, however, be necessary in the case of candidates who are Gorkha subjects of Nepal.

 

Age: Only unmarried male candidates are eligible.They must be between16 ½ to 19 years on January 1st or July 1st of the year subsequent to the year of the exam.

Educational Qualifications :

(i) For Army wing of National Defence Academy: 12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University.
(ii) For Air Force and Naval Wings of National Defence Academy and for the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy: 12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics conducted by a State Education Board or a University.

Candidates who are appearing in the 12th Class under 10+2 Pattern of School Education or equivalent examination can also apply for this examination.

Physical Standards :

(a) The candidate must be in good physical and mental health and free from any disease/disability which is likely to interfere with the efficient performance of Military duties.
(b) There should be no evidence of weak constitution, bodily defects or under weight. The Candidate should not be overweight or obese.
(c) The minimum acceptable height is 157 cms(162.5 cms. for Air Force). For Gorkhas and individuals belonging to hills of North-Eastern regions of India, Garhwal and Kumaon, the minimum acceptable heights will be 5 cms. less. In case of candidates from Lakshadweep the minimum acceptable height can be reduced by 2 cms.

Selection Procedure :

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts NDA (National Defence Academy) & NA (National Academy)
UPSC conducts  NDA (National Defence Academy)  Exam in Two Stages.

  1. Written Examination

  2. Interview

Written Examination: The exam will constitute 2 subjects, Maths and General Ability Test and each subject is given the time limit 2 ½ Hours, maximum marks for Maths is 300 & General ability is 600. The papers in all the subjects will consist of objective type questions only. The question papers of Mathematics & Part B of General Ability Test will be set bilingually in Hindi as well as English. The Commission have discretion to fix qualifying marks in any or all the subjects at the examination.

Interview: Qualified candidates in the written examination will be called for Interview conducted by SSB (Services selection board). For Army, Navy Wings & 10 +2 Entry Scheme candidates need to undergo Intelligence Test & Personality Test, but for Air Force Wing the candidates must attend a Pilot Aptitude Test. The Interview Consists both Intelligence & Personality Test.

Intelligence and Personality Test:

The SSB procedure consists of two stage Selection process-stage I and stage II. Only those candidates who clear the stage I are permitted to appear for stage II. The details are :

  1. Stage I comprises of Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) tests are Picture Perception Description Test (PP&DT). The candidates will be shortlisted based on combination of performance in QIR Test and PP and DT.

  2. Stage II Comprises of Interview, Group Testing Officer Tasks, Psychology Tests and the Conference. These tests are conducted over 4 days.

The personality of a candidate is assessed by three different assessors viz. the Interviewing Officer (IO), Group Testing Officer (GTO)and the Psychologist. There are no separate weightage for each test. The marks are allotted by assessors only after taking into consideration the performance of the candidate holistically in all the test. In addition, marks for Conference are also alloted based on the initial perfomance of the canidate in the three techniques and decision of the Board. All these have equal weightage.

The various tests of IO, GTO and Psych are designed to bring out the presence/ absence of Officer Like Qualities and their trainability in a candidate. Accordingly candidates are Recommended or Not Recommended at the SSB.

Air Force Group X :

Indian Air Force Group X Exam is conducted for technical and non technical airmen vacancies in the force. The Central Airmen Selection Board (CASB) is tasked with the responsibility of selection and enrollment. CASB has 14 airmen selection centers located all over India. Candidates who clear this exam are first required to undergo 12 weeks of Joint Basic Phase Training at Basic Training Institute Belgaum (Karnataka). After successful completion of JBPT candidates are allotted trades and then provided trade specific training. On completion of trade specific training airmen are deployed for ground based duties as per their trade.

About Air Force Group “X”
The Indian Air Force recruits candidate as Airmen in 2 fields one is group ‘X’ and other group ‘Y’.
Eligibility Criteria of Group X 
GROUP ‘X’ Trades (Except Education Instructor)
Note: The upper age limit on date of enrolment is 21 years.
Age : 17- 21 Years

Education Qualification :

Passed Intermediate / 10+2 / equivalent examination with Mathematics, Physics and English with minimum 50% marks in aggregate and 50% marks in English. (or)
Passed 3 years Diploma Course in Engineering in any stream, as shown below, from a Government recognized Polytechnic Institute with 50% marks in aggregate, and 50% marks in English in Diploma or in Intermediate/Matriculation, if English is not a subject in Diploma Course.
GROUP ‘X’: Education Instructor Trade
Age : 20 – 25 Years

Education Qualification :
(i) BA with English as one the subjects or B.Sc with Physics/ Psychology/ Chemistry/ Mathematics/ IT / Computer Science/ Statistics as one of the subjects or BCA with minimum 50% marks.
(ii) B.Ed degree with minimum of 50% marks from a Government recognized institute.
(iii) Graduation and B.Ed programmes should be recognized by UGC/ NCTE/ Competent accreditation authority.
Age : 20 – 28 Years

Education Qualification :
(i) MA in English/ Psychology or M.Sc in Mathematics/ Physics/ Statistics/ Computer Science/ IT or MCA with 50% marks.
(ii) B.Ed degree with minimum of 50% marks from a government recognized institute.
(iii) Graduation, Post-Graduation and B.Ed programmes should be recognized by UGC/ NCTE/ Competent accreditation authority.

Physical & Medical Standards :
To get selected as an Airman, the candidate must be physically and mentally FIT to perform duties in any part of the world, climate and terrain.

Exam will be in three successive phases :

  1. (a) Phase-I Online Test

  2. (b) Phase-II Physical Fitness Test, AT-I and AT-II Test

  3. (c) Phase-III Medical Fitness Test

The Online Test {For both Group ‘ X’ Trades (except Education Instructor Trade)} . The candidates are to qualify in each paper separately in their respective groups. The IAF Airmen Online Test is as follows:

Group ‘X’ Trades: Duration of the Online test will be 60 minutes and will comprise of English, Physics, and Mathematics as per 10+2 CBSE syllabus.

Group ‘X’ Trades: Duration of the Online test will be 85 minutes and will comprise of English, Physics, and Mathematics as per 10+2 CBSE syllabus and Reasoning & General Awareness (RAGA).

Indian Air Force Airmen Physical Exam :

The candidates who pass the online test will be called at the designated Airmen Selection Centre for Physical Fitness Test (PFT) which would consist of 1.6 Km run to be completed within 06 minutes and 30 seconds. Candidates will also have to complete 10 push-ups, 10 sit-ups, and 20 squats within the stipulated time to qualify for the Physical Fitness Test.

  • Note: Candidates are advised to bring their sports shoes and shorts/Track pants.

  • Adaptability Test 1: All candidates who pass the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) will have to undertake Adaptability Test-1 (objective type written test) which is to assess the suitability of a candidate for employment in the IAF which involves deployment in varied geographic terrain, weather and operational conditions.

  • Adaptability Test 2: All candidates who pass Adaptability Test -1 will have to undertake Adaptability Test-2 as per policy in vogue. Adaptability Test-2 is to select candidates who can adapt to the environment of Indian Air Force and are able to adjust to the military way of life.

Air Force Group X :

Educational Qualification :

Should have passed Class 10 + 2/Intermediate/Equivalent exam from an education board / Institute listed in Council of Boards for School Education (COBSE) website as members, in any stream/subjects with minimum 50% marks in aggregate and 50% marks in English as per the mark sheet of Class 10 + 2 / Intermediate /Equivalent exam.
GROUP ‘Y: Med Asst Trade
Age : 17- 21 Years

Education Qualification :
Passed 10+2 / Intermediate / equivalent exam with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate, and 50% marks in English.
GROUP ‘Y’: Musician Trade
Age :17 – 25 Years

Education Qualification :
Passed Matriculation /10th class or equivalent with minimum pass marks from any Government recognised School/Boards and should be proficient in playing at least one of the following musical instruments: Trumpet / Bass / Violin / Saxophone / Clarinet / Euphonium / Jazz-Drum / Piccolo / Bass Trombone / Key Board / Guitar / Sarod / Viola / Cello / Contra Bass (String Bass).
